NNT_WPD_let-them-thriveOn World Prematurity Day, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all #nurses, #doctors and #support-staff for taking #respectful care of our preterm babies. Thank you for your dedication!

#WorldPrematurityDay     #letthemthrive

Every year 1 in 10 babies are born premature. That’s one every 90 minutes.  A total of 5,000+ Kiwi babies are cared for in the neonatal units across New Zealand.

In 2017, the hashtag being used for World Prematurity Day is #letthemthrive which fits so well with the objectives of The Little Miracles Trust to support families and enhance the care of neonatal babies. We aim to support neonatal journeys to enhance the care of the precious babies in a variety of different ways. These examples are aligned with our three core objectives:
  • Supporting neonatal families through the stress and anxiety of a neonatal journey. We provide support resources, co-ordinate services and help them in a wide range of ways.
See examples of our support resources here.
  • Supporting neonatal units to provide the very best care. This includes assisting the units with equipment and supporting the professional development of neonatal nurses. A range of examples can be seen in this gallery.
  • Supporting neonatal research so that outcomes are improved for future premature and sick babies. Learn more about our support of research

Neonatal NovemberWorld Prematurity Day is part of ‘Neonatal November’!

We celebrate and support World Prematurity Day (November 17) and have proudly done so for 4 years. Premature babies make up the majority of patients in neonatal units – however, we’re also super conscious that there are many other neonatal journeys each year, ie the full-term babies with health issues and/or complications.
All babies needing an extra hand are cared for by the caring, patient and kind staff in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and Special Care Baby Units (SCBUs).

Raising awareness and funds to enable more support
‘Neonatal November’ is a focal point for raising more awareness & support for families going through the stress of a neonatal journey.
As part of this, we’re looking for your help to enable more of this support to happen.

Givealittle_logoCan you help?  If you can support and/or spread the word our Givealittle page can be seen here: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/neonatal-november-2017
This is a fundraiser for our work supporting families going through the stress and anxiety of a neonatal journey.

In the last year, or so, we have launched & refreshed 7 support resources for parents, funded research to enhance the care of future neonatal babies, contributed to working groups to review and enhance family support, introduced new initiatives like ‘Neonatal Secret Santa’, and more.  ‘More’ is the key word, as we want to provide more of this practical and meaningful support.
Please consider helping us deliver more support at https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/neonatal-november-2017

A great example of the practical and meaningful support we provide is our support resources.
Neonatal journeys can be full of stress and anxiety. To help, working with parents who have been on a neonatal journey, we have developed a number of easy to read support resources. These cover a range of different topics, including:

– Reading to your Baby      – Health and Wellbeing (REF)      – The benefits of knitting      – Tips for Dads    – Your Emotions      – Leaving the Unit     – Kangaroo Cuddles      – Bonding with your baby

 – Do you know someone currently on a neonatal journey?  Send them to littlemiraclestrust.org.nz/support where they can read and download these resources.
