Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is aiming to raise awareness of kangaroo care with a new photo series which captures the intimate bond between mothers and their babies, as they are held and touched during their stay in the NICU.

Kangaroo care involves skin-to-skin contact between new babies and parents, which is recommended by experts to both improve the health of the baby as well as forge a closer bond between parents and child.

The practice is believed to help babies gain weight, cry less, sleep easily, and have more regular breathing and heart rates.

It’s also been known to reduce stress in new parents and help mothers produce more breast milk.
