Waikato rescue helicopter open day
The Waikato rescue helicopter had their open day which was attended by thousands of people.
The rescue helicopter has become the main transportation link for Waikato Hospital’s specialist services with about 60 per cent of missions now inter-hospital transfers. Included in the display was Waikato hospital’s mobile intensive care newborn unit, which is transported by the helicopter around the region to airlift and treat ill and premature babies. “Equipped with a nurse, doctor, incubator and ventilator the unit is dispatched to retrieve urgent neo-natal patients up to 16 weeks early from smaller hospitals and birthing centres” flight nurse Natalia Ollington said.
“It’s absolutely life saving – sometimes they will need to be on life support or require ventilation.”
