Neonatal nurse and baby reconnect after 28 years

A wonderful story of a neonatal nurse reconnecting with a baby she cared for 28 years earlier! Twenty-eight years ago, neonatal intensive care nurse Vilma Wong cared for a premature baby, Brandon Seminatore, who weighed only 2 lbs., and 6 oz. Since then, she’s seen tens of thousands of babies come through the unit, The Mercury…

Behind the scenes, Fathers Day packs

On Sunday 2nd September, we delivered hundreds of 'Pick-me-up' packs to neonatal dads on Father's Day.  The delivery of these packs provides a good case study into the organisation of our support activities - a number of which benefit from the philosophy 'Many hands make light work'.  Like a lot of our support, this is a regular activity.  By…

Chelsea – Our little miracle

As told by mum Lisa Chelsea is our little miracle. Jason's unexpected beginning

As told by mum Megan Like many other first time expectant mothers, I had visions of a calm, smooth 12-14 hour drug-free water birth where I would spend the next several hours doing skin to skin. What I got was an 8 day overdue, 31 hour drug-induced labour that ended with an extra bit of…

Harrison's love for water helps overcome challenges

As told by mum Nicola At 27 weeks gestation, after 4 hours of complications and many, many, phone calls we were advised to come to the hospital . . .    “YOUR BABY IS COMING TODAY” were the only words we heard.  David and I looked at each other and our hearts sank.  We were instantly…

Eliza – A full term journey

As told by mum Amanda Eliza was born at almost 42 weeks, after a reasonably stressful labour. She was resuscitated, then placed on my chest for her first skin to skin. My husband and I were instantly in love with our healthy, alert baby girl. I had never met a newborn before, so it was…

Researcher finds gut bacteria behaves differently in those born premature

The answer to why premature babies have a greater risk of becoming obese could be in the gut.   Researchers from Auckland University have found that bacteria behaved differently in children who were born at fewer than 32 weeks.  They were more likely to develop obesity and diabetes, Associate Professor Dr Justin O'Sullivan said. In the recent, yet-to-be-published study, the research…

“Shoutout to your amazing ladies in Waikato & Auckland NICU. We have finally been discharged from Rotorua today back home to Taupō after being in Waikato & a couple of small stints in Auckland… (Our baby) is smashing it and we’re such proud parents. Your support was amazing! Thank you.”

“I take my wee purple bag everywhere for my son’s tubie bits and pieces. I cannot count the amount of times that little purple bag has helped to strike up a conversation and connected me with other NICU mums”

“This really helped me to step away for even just an hour when I was in SCBU with my boy recently… Plus the  kōrero was super helpful & put me at ease. The sweet treats were pretty awesome too. Jess is amazing”

“Such a great playgroup!”

“We ended up spending 19 days in SCBU with Jasper, which included Christmas Day. We did not expect the amazing, kind and useful presents from Little Miracles at all, and it made the hugest difference to what was a pretty grim day for us. I was absolutely blown away and in tears. Such unexpected generosity at such a vulnerable time… I’ll remember that forever.”

“Receiving your thoughtful gift pack today brought a tear to our eyes. It was truly heartwarming to see the care and consideration put into every detail, including the Te Reo Māori milestone cards, which deeply resonate with our values and culture. Your kindness has brought a ray of light into our lives during a time of uncertainty, and for that, we are forever grateful.”

“Thank you so much for granting us the six breast feeding pillows. They have been so well received and well utilised. Many thanks once again from all of us in Hawkes Bay”
