Valerie Adams discusses her fears
Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Valerie Adams says it felt “wrong” to be separated from her newborn baby, who was whisked off to an incubator after his premature birth in March.
When the champion shot putter went into labour with her second baby five weeks early, her obstetrician instructed her to “get straight to the hospital”, she told Woman’s Day.
Kepaleli was quickly delivered by Caesarean section, weighing in at a healthy 3.1kg, but his underdeveloped lungs meant he was struggling for oxygen.
Adams’ doctors at Auckland City Hospital admitted Kepaleli to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where he would spend the first week of his life in an incubator.
“It felt kind of wrong,” Adams said. “You’re meant to have your baby with you… Not miles away in another area.”
