AUCKLAND

What a busy year it’s shaping up to be already with a number of our groups kicking off again in February.  On 1 February we held the first of our Coffee Confidential coffee groups with Ariella Bond (Social Worker) and Lara Mulgrew (Registered Psychotherapist) chatting with some of our ex-NICU Mums helping them to work through their NICU journey and the transition home.  And last Thursday our Developmental Playgroup had a fantastic turnout of Mums and babies getting together with our team of Kathryn and Janet.  These groups provide a vital outlet for our families after their time in NICU/SCBU, a safe space for them to meet with families who have been through similar experiences so do feel free to pass on the attached info to any families.

The next coffee group will be on 1 March and the developmental playgroup is held every other Thursday, so the next one is 7 March followed by 14 March.

Kangaroo Cuddle belts for hire for $20, these belts which are perfect for Mums to use when having skin-to-skin cuddles with their baby and we’ve even got some for twins to use when having twin cuddles.  We’ll be taking a $20 bond and a $20 hire fee for up to three months hire.

Neonatal Trust Chiller Bags and Water Bottles – to encourage our Mums to stay hydrated and to keep their breastmilk chilled we’ve had some bags and bottle made up with our logo which are now for sale in the shop

As for fundraising, the year started off well with Katie Salter running a marathon in Maui in 3h 48m, finishing third in her age group. She said that given the heat it was a tough run but the course was stunning and seeing whales along the way was inspirational  The funds from this will enable us to support the flights and accommodation for one of the keynote speakers for this year’s COINN conference.

Winter is coming!

With the first of the cooler weather beginning to be felt, it is the time of year when we start thinking about keeping warm during the colder months, and few of us more so than parents of premature and sick babies. There is a wealth of information available on the health and wellbeing benefits of knitting and crochet for those wanting to get crafty, and on the health benefits to babies of wearing of wool clothing. If you belong to a knitting, crochet or creative fiber group, or you simply want to give it a go, we gratefully accept donations of knitted items.

Right now we have loads of hats and booties, but we could really do with more singlets for layering up, and small buggy/ bassinet/ cot sized blankets. If you are just starting out and a whole blanket sounds daunting, don’t fret! if you want to give knitted squares, or crochet granny squares a go, we’ll happily take those too and stitch them together with others to make patchwork blankets!

Please remember that items do need to be wool or natural fibers, as acrylic does not breathe, and if knitting garments, please use a stretchy cast on and cast off – thank you!
