Following the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup 2011, Wellington’s Evan Belford and his rag tag team of die-hard rugby supporters, like many Kiwis, were suffering from the rare rugby withdrawal syndrome. Unable to remedy their progressive disorder, they have embraced the condition by focusing their attention on their next rugby hit. And so, in late 2011, the Flying Squadron was formed.

The Flying SquadronInspired by the original 486 RNZAF Squadron that flew Hurricane fighter planes in WWII, and whose motto was “Hiwa Hau Maka” (beware the wild winds) Flying Squadron is looking to evoke the same spirit in the current fleet of Hurricanes through their unrelenting support for the team. Flying Squadron is an independent, fan lead supporters’ club of the Hurricanes Rugby Franchise.  Although an independent supporters club, it is privileged to have the support and backing of the Hurricanes Board, Management and Players.

The Flying Squadron want to build a culture that will give the Hurricanes team belief that their fans support them all the way, no matter what. Their mission is to create an atmosphere and experience that supporters lose all inhibitions in showing their undivided passion for the Hurricanes. Through wind hail and rain, the Flying Squadron’s loyalty will never waver, their passion will never falter. Flying Squadron, the unconditional supporters of the Hurricanes.

And the connection with The Little Miracles Trust (Wellington)? Well the Flying Squadron have decided that in their first year that they will donate a proportion of every membership to the Trust as part of their support for the work of the Trust! They have already presented the Trust with their first donation – thank you very much Flying Squadron!
